The D4 folding armchair, design by Marcel Breuer for Tecta, is a reproduction of the original project presented in 1927 at the Weissenhof Housing Exhibition, in a house designed by Gropius. Soon after the exhibit Standard-Mobel, Lengyel & Company put the D4 Folding Chair into production. The D4 Folding Chair was in production until Thonet took over the manufacturing of Breuer furniture.
The structure is nickel plated tubular steel. Seat, back and arms in canvas combined with hide. When fabric or leather belts are used for upholstery, Cora black is used on back.
The Breuer Folding armchair captures the same essence that his famous Wassily chair embodies. Its geometric form brings a simple elegance to a room, while his combination of tubular steel and canvas upholstery defines Bauhaus. The version presented by Tecta is the same as seen in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. A version suitable for outdoors is produced in Cora fabric and stainless steel.
Made in Germany by Tecta. Licensed reproductions of Bauhaus Designs by Tecta are approved by the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin and carry the Signet "Original Bauhaus Modell" as designed by Oskar Schlemmer at The Bauhaus Weimar in 1922.
