Monk chair is designed by Tobia Scarpa and riedited by Molteni with solid walnut or oak frame, a painted steel structure, and a saddle leather seat.
First conceived in 1973 by Afra and Tobia Scarpa, the Monk chair is an icon of Italian design—an emblem of purity and sophistication. In 2025, to mark the Milan Design Week, Molteni&C unveiled an exclusive re-edition of this celebrated piece, adding it to the prestigious Heritage Collection, which pays tribute to 20th-century design masterpieces.
Faithful to the spirit of the original, the new edition enhances the clarity of the form and the superior quality of the materials. The frame is crafted from solid wood, available in fine finishes such as American walnut, black oak, and coffee oak, lending the chair a sense of warmth and solidity. The seat and backrest are formed from a single piece of pre-shaped leather, stretched across two tubular steel elements. This solution ensures ergonomic comfort while maintaining a visually light silhouette. Eight burnished steel rivets anchor the seat to the frame, adding a subtle yet distinctive decorative detail.
The name “Monk” reflects the almost monastic simplicity of the design, while the letter “M” nods to the Scarpas’ habit of naming their creations with this initial.
This reissue also introduces a wider and lower lounge version of the chair, designed for both residential and hospitality settings, further expanding the versatility of the model.
