Monk armchair is designed by Tobia Scarpa and riedited by Molteni with solid walnut or oak frame and seat with a painted steel structure, and a saddle leather.
Originally designed in 1973 by Afra and Tobia Scarpa, the Monk project stands as a timeless icon of Italian design—a perfect balance of formal rigor and material sensitivity. In 2025, on the occasion of Milan Design Week, Molteni&C unveiled an exclusive reissue of this celebrated chair as part of its prestigious Heritage Collection, a tribute to the great masters of 20th-century design.
Alongside the dining version, a new variant was introduced: a lounge chair, lower and wider, conceived to offer an even more relaxed seating experience while preserving the original’s understated elegance.
The name “Monk” evokes the project’s almost ascetic simplicity, while the letter “M” reflects the Scarpas’ habit of naming their designs with this initial. The new edition stays true to the original spirit, celebrating the purity of its form and the quality of its materials. The frame is crafted from solid wood, available in refined finishes such as American walnut, black oak, and coffee-stained oak—each bringing warmth and solidity to the piece.
Seat and backrest are formed from a single piece of pre-shaped leather, stretched over two metal tubes to ensure ergonomic comfort and a visually lightweight profile. Eight burnished steel rivets secure the seat to the frame, adding a subtle yet distinctive decorative touch.
