Tulip armchair is designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll with swivel or fixed base in cast aluminium with Rilsan black or white coated finish and shell in moulded fibreglass reinforced plastic bonded.
Available with either an upholstered seat cushion, or fully upholstered inner shell with seat cushion, with fabric or leather cover.
The history of this chair dates back to the late '50s as a result of a long research regarding the new possibilities offered by plastic materials.
The Finnish architect Eero Saarinen decided to satisfy a precise aesthetic need that is to make the environments, made ugly and confused by the "slum of legs" underneath chairs and table. In 1958 was launched the Pedestal collection, consisting of dining tables, coffee tables and seats, including the Tulip armchair, characterized by the presence of a single and essential stem-shaped pedestal in support of tops and seats.
The Tulip chair has become the icon of an era, one of the projects that gave birth to a new way of designing and has also been able to give personality to an element that, most of the times, was considered only according to its comfort.
