Mario Cananzi and Roberto Semprini on Classicdesign.it
The collaboration between Mario Cananzi and Roberto Semprini began in the late 1980s, during a period of intense creative energy, and immediately distinguished itself through a design approach that blends formal research, material experimentation, and a strongly symbolic language. Both trained in architecture in Florence, they brought to design a rich and multifaceted cultural background: Cananzi with a path that spans industrial design and the motorcycle world, and Semprini with experience that intertwines design, communication, and scenography.
Their work moves between art and function, with constant attention to the dynamics of form and to the ability of objects to express a sense of movement even when still. This vision finds its highest expression in the iconic Tatlin sofa for Edra, a postmodern masterpiece inspired by Vladimir Tatlin’s constructivist tower. A sculptural creation that marked an era, awarded internationally and now considered a collectible symbol of their design philosophy.
Alongside this landmark piece, their portfolio includes tables, seating, and furnishings that explore curves, transparency, innovative materials, and advanced technical solutions. They have collaborated with companies such as Edra, Fiam, Moroso, Bonacina, Punt Mobles, and many other brands that recognized their ability to transform ideas into objects with strong aesthetic impact. Their works have entered museums, galleries, and international collections, confirming a career that helped redefine the language of contemporary Italian design.
