The Essence of Italian Design
Giotto Stoppino, born in Vigevano in 1926, is one of the leading figures in 20th-century Italian design. After an impressive architectural education between Milan and Venice, he co-founded the studio Architetti Associati with Gregotti and Meneghetti in the 1950s, contributing to the Neoliberty movement. However, it was in the 1960s, with the launch of his independent studio, that Stoppino turned his focus to product design, creating works that have left an indelible mark on the international stage.
Known for his collaborations with prestigious brands such as Kartell, Acerbis, and Arteluce, Stoppino masterfully combined form and function with an innovative vision that continues to inspire contemporary designers. Among his most iconic creations is the Sheraton sideboard for Acerbis, which won the Compasso d’Oro in 1979, and the "537" lamp for Arteluce, showcased at the renowned "Italy: the New Domestic Landscape" exhibition at MoMA in New York.
His works, displayed in world-class museums such as MoMA and the Victoria and Albert Museum, embody the harmony between art and technology, illustrating Stoppino’s fundamental contribution to modern design. With his dedication and talent, he earned three Compasso d’Oro awards, including the prestigious lifetime achievement edition in 2011, a recognition celebrating a unique and unparalleled career.
