Barcelona chair history

Why and how the Barcelona chair has become a modern design classic masterpiece?
Why the poltrona Barcelona is it so hard to find ?
Where can I buy this lovely Chair?

We guess you will find the answers to these questions in this article so we suggest to take 5 minutes of your precious time and read on.

The Barcelona Chair story started with a man of German origin, born in 1886 and became one of the leading modernist designer and architects of the past century.
This man is called Ludwig Mies Van de Rohe. Mr Van de Rohe was the director of the Bauhaus: a design school that emerged in Germany since 1919. The goal of the Bauhaus designers was to broke from tradition and develop a very modernist style by integrating art, technology and craftsmanship. Their philosophy was 'Ignore the past and generate a new design philosophy'.

In 1929 the World Arts Fair was in Barcelona [Spain] and the German government commissioned Mies to create the German Pavilion as part of the exposition.
Mies designed a modern building built with marble, glass and  steel....then it was the time to create the furniture. Simple task?

Not at all...Van Der Rohe said:
“To design a chair is a very difficult task. Everyone who has ever tried to make one knows that. There are endless possibilities and many problems - the chair has to be light, it has to be strong, it has to be comfortable. It is almost easier to build a sky scraper than a chair.” - Mies 1930

He wanted to create "an important chair, a very elegant chair and costly. It had to be monumental. You couldn’t just use a kitchen chair”.- Mies 1929

The Barcelona chair was created to be the throne for the Queen and the King of Spain and the Barcelona chiars were the only furniture in the whole building.

From this start the Barcelona Chairs soon became a masterpiece, a status symbol... but to be a design icon of the XX century doesnt mean the chair must be expensive !!!

Van Der Rohe, as Bauhaus designer, believed in functional furniture, that could be mass produced. Under the present copyright law the Barcelona chair could be reproduced without any copyright cost...and that's cause you can find high quality reproduction at the right price. Check it on the web and find the Barcelona chair for your house.
