Basket sofa is designed by Joe Colombo for Gubi with steel shell covered with a handwoven rattan skin; seat, backrest and armrests cushions padded in foam and wadding with fabric and leather upholstery. Available as two and three-seater sofa.
First produced in the late 1960s by specialist rattan furniture manufacturer Pierantonio Bonacina, who commissioned Colombo to design it, the Basket Collection has been relaunched by Gubi after decades out of production. The Danish company’s version remains true to Colombo’s vision, while optimizing the proportions for the ergonomic needs of the present day. The series includes a three-seater sofa, a two-seater sofa and a lounge chair, all of which share the same structure, covered with a hand woven rattan skin, a technique that demands a tremendous degree of skill and craftsmanship to create.
Organic lines, a modernist aesthetic and a highly innovative approach to the chosen material, Colombo has focused on these characteristics to increase the appeal of this line of furniture. The design demonstrates the balance between technique and material, combining traditional artisanal methods and one of the oldest known materials: a perfect combination of craftsmanship and industry. Basket seats are completed with soft rounded cushions on the seat and back, and cylindrical bolster cushions adding additional softness and embracing effect to the sides of the chair. The curves and contours of the cushions create an inviting and organic look, with a smooth texture that contrasts with the sense of rippling movement conveyed in the weaving pattern of the rattan below.
