Born and raised in Chicago with African roots, Burks has championed an inclusive vision through his studio, Stephen Burks Man Made.

After graduating in Architecture and Product Design from prestigious institutes such as the Illinois Institute of Technology and Columbia University, Burks expanded his horizons through travels to over ten countries and six continents. These experiences have shaped his poetics, characterized by a multicultural and inclusive perspective.

Collaborating with renowned industry brands like Missoni, Dedon, and Luceplan, Burks has crafted collections that challenge the boundaries of traditional design. Leveraging handcrafting as a tool for innovation, he has developed sustainable products that celebrate the skills of local artisans in developing countries.

Beyond his design endeavors, Burks is committed to teaching and promoting design internationally. Currently a lecturer at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, he also hosts television series and actively engages in the global art and cultural scene.
