Stefan Diez on Classicdesign.it
Stefan Diez, inheriting a four-generation family tradition of carpentry, stands as a prominent figure in contemporary industrial design. Trained as a cabinetmaker before studying industrial design at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart under the mentorship of Richard Sapper, Diez combines a deep understanding of craftsmanship with a forward-thinking, innovative approach.
His studio, DIEZ OFFICE, founded in Munich in 2003, is renowned for its experimentation with materials and technologies, consistently working in collaboration with local artisans, technicians, and engineers. Each project emerges from a creative process that blends tradition and modernity, with a keen focus on sustainability and product longevity. Diez believes design should enhance everyday life through simple, comprehensible, and adaptable solutions, with products designed to be reshaped, repaired, and used over time.
Collaborating with leading brands such as Magis, Vibia, Hay, and Emu, Stefan Diez has created iconic works ranging from lighting to modular furniture, always pushing the boundaries of industrial production. Notable creations include the PLUSMINUS lighting system for Vibia, which combines compositional freedom with advanced technical solutions, and the Costume modular sofa for Magis, a sustainable design crafted from recyclable materials.
Stefan Diez represents a new generation of designers who face the challenges of globalization with creativity and environmental consciousness, while staying true to his artisanal roots.
