Francesco Binfaré on Classicdesign.it
Francesco Binfaré (Milan, 1939) is one of the most original and influential figures in Italian design, capable of transforming the very idea of seating into an emotional, fluid and deeply contemporary experience. His training is rooted in art: drawing and painting, learned from his father during the war years, became the language through which he observed the world and interpreted its forms.
In the 1960s, his encounter with the Cassina brothers marked the beginning of a path that would make him a vital creative force within the company. As director of the Cesare Cassina Research Centre, Binfaré guided designers such as Vico Magistretti, Gaetano Pesce, Mario Bellini and Archizoom in the development of projects destined to become icons of Italian design. At the same time, he explored new creative territories by founding experimental ventures such as Bracciodiferro and Environmedia, anticipating themes and languages that would later define the postmodern movement.
In the early 1990s, he began a new phase of his career by joining the creative team at Edra. Here he found the ideal ground to develop his vision: sculptural, soft, deconstructed sofas capable of adapting to the gestures and postures of the people who use them. This is where pieces that redefined the concept of comfort were born — On the Rocks, Flap, Sfatto, Standard, Pack, Absolu, Essential — works that combine compositional freedom, material research and unprecedented expressive power. Several of these pieces are now part of the MoMA collection in New York and have been featured in major international projects.
Binfaré’s work expresses a new way of living: more intuitive, more personal, more attuned to emotion. His sofas are not simply furnishings but domestic landscapes that welcome, follow the body, and evolve over time and with use. A vision that earned him the 2022 Compasso d’Oro for Lifetime Achievement, a tribute to a unique career that seamlessly blends art, design and creative freedom.
