Dozie Kanu on Classicdesign.it
Dozie Kanu is one of the most compelling and visionary voices in contemporary international art and design. Born in Texas in 1993 to a family of Nigerian descent and now based in Santarém, Portugal, the designer masterfully blends African diasporic heritage, industrial aesthetics, and the influences of Houston's "slab car" culture from his youth.
Kanu’s work transcends traditional definitions of furniture: each piece stands as a functional sculpture and a cultural vehicle. By repurposing reclaimed materials, raw industrial components, and everyday objects, the artist reinterprets matter to inject living spaces with deep symbolic resonance and a bold identity.
Winner of the Hublot Design Prize in 2018 and featured in prestigious venues such as The Studio Museum in Harlem, the Venice Biennale, and the New Museum in New York, Kanu creates furniture pieces that seamlessly merge utilitarianism, provocation, and formal elegance.
