Sofa With Arms (1982) armchair is designed by Shiro Kuramata for Cappellini with frame in chromed metal tube with seat in poplar plywood, back in massive fir-tree and medium density wooden conglomerate parts; padding with multi-density polyurethane foam, fixed cover in fabric and leather; white plastic feet.
An homage to the masters of early 20th century Modernism, the Sofa with Arms armchair by Shiro Kuramata has a structure made of chromed tubular metal, padded with polyurethane foam and upholstered with the fabrics and leathers from the collection. The dynamic lines and the chosen materials define its contemporary style, while the simplicity of its innate elegance is undeniably evocative of the distinctive Japanese style.
A design icon, Shiro Kuramata was the Japanese designer who best epitomized the spirit of the era in which he lived, through his highly significant products and creations.
Kuramata first encountered Italian design through Memphis, then in 1987, with Cappellini, for whom he created the Progetti Compiuti chest of drawers series. All of the pieces Kuramata made for the company were incredibly well-received, such as the Steel Pipe Drink Trolly, the Sofa With Arms, the Ko-Ko table, the Bookshelf and the Revolving Cabinet chest of drawers.
