Description

Phileas armchair is designed by Philippe Nigro for Ligne Roset with structure in mechanically-soldered steel and panels of particleboard, clad in polyester quilting. Base in Epoxy satin black or satin bronze lacquered steel. Optional solid walnut base with tubular steel core for reinforcement.

Suspension on seat via elastic webbing. Integral seat cushion in high resilience polyurethane Bultex foam; back in Bultex foam. Upholstery in fabric or leather.

Phileas seating both challenges and surprises: he has managed the impressive feat of achieving cutting edge modernity, imbuing his creation with real personality and a strong visual identity close to the ‘never-beforeseen’, whilst at the same time awakening a cluster of nostalgic reminiscences which anchor it in reassuring historical continuity, like a real multifaceted Proust madeleine.

This vertical quilting also recalls the upholstery of 1950s automobile seats, banquettes from the mythical Orient Express, the hushed surroundings of English gentlemen’s clubs, the novels of Agatha Christie and Jules Verne, the balloons of the Montgolfier brothers...inviting one on a real motionless journey through time.

Ligne Roset

Ligne Roset

Antoine Roset opened a wood processing factory in Montagnieu, in the Ain province of France. Very quickly he and his son Emile began producing wooden umbrellas, walking sticks and, perhaps foretelling, chair frames.

In post-war 1950 Antoine’s grandson, Jean, quickly shifted the focus of the company- which now employed 50 people- to contract furniture. Tables, chairs, and beds were produced for commercial usage and were utilized in a variety of institutions, including schools, universities, hospitals and retirement homes. Intense growth soon followed and, 10 years later, Jean Roset entered the domestic market.

Jean’s sons Pierre and Michel joined the family business during the explosion of creativity- the hallmark of the 1960’s and 1970’s-which presented a timely opportunity to revitalize the company by working with interior architects and designers such as Michel Ducaroy. The Ligne Roset brand became official in 1973 with the very first store opening, alongside the launch of Michel Ducaroy’s Togo, a timeless, iconic piece that continues to enrapture a captive audience.
